My good mate Daryl had asked me to come in and play a few tunes for his primary school class during their semester themed "I am a performer" project. Little did I know it ended up an almost hour slot with close to 200 children there.
From dealing with children before, I know how distracted they get and how they need to be entertained so I had no choice but to at least put some preparation in for this one. I played a few current pop tracks that I reckoned they would know, and which they did for that matter, and weren't afraid to song it LOUD! I prepared an mini-educational slot on Irish culture, teaching them some "Gaeilge" basics and playing typical old Irish tunes, dance songs and national anthems. One particular idea that went well was "Guess the Song", little did I know how competitive it would become, with marshmallow chocolates being the reward for the correct answer. I too was surprised how quickly they got the songs ranging from golden classics way before their time right up to the overplayed current pop hits. I got three older girls at the school to get up and jam out one of their favourites, which gave them a great opportunity to feel what its like to be up on stage. I finished off with a live sung version of Fame Train with the quirky pop video playing in the backdrop.
Overall the whole thing really well, they enjoyed it and I challenged myself with something new. Absolutely knackered after it too. one of the toughest hour gigs I've ever played!
