A 22 hour stopover was required in Darwin airport before my next flight to Cairns on the east coast. So after a rough night in this tiny little Darwin airport I grabbed a shared taxi into the city center. My first impressions of Australia were confirmed here. It was chilled out, everything moved slower, it was clean, high quality lifestyle and the weather looked pretty amazing. It was kind of what I expected from word of mouth.
I headed down the main street towards the waterfront, which had people lazying about sun-tanning on the grass, a man-made pool/lagoon, some outdoor music and of course a crystal blue sky with a glaring ozzy sun. Different lifestyle mate!!!
I just happened to be in Darwin when his Holiness, the Dalai Lama was in town. Being a fan of these type of Buddhist teachings and out of pure curiosity I wanted to try get in. It was fully booked out and being Irish I tried every trick in the book asking every poor unfortunate soul on the way. Luckily, one women part of the tour crew seen our efforts and managed to sneak us in to the huge auditorium of the Darwin convention center. There were two things I took from his seminar, (1) The education system needs refurbishment, it needs to teach children/teenagers about inner values aswell as the common educational subjects and (2) that asking for blessing from an external god is a little unrealistic, you are your own true master! (he finished on this!).
....Ok back to airport.....
