I left Ireland in early 2013 with a solo ticket. After one full revolution of this planet, I landed back on the emerald Isle in Summer 2015. That roundtrip, took me through countries from India, Philippines, New Zealand to Colombia. "Backpacking" is the term they use, essentially travelling with all your belongings and survival needs draped on your shoulders, the smaller the better, the same clothes a lot, a little bit unkept and hairy but there is pride in this stature. Hostels are generally the place to be where you meet these fellow revellers and so the chat begins. The questions, the enthusiasm, the excitement. You've just met for 15 minutes but firmly believe that you are now "Friends Forever". Although I'm poking fun at that statement and in the song in general, it is true, there is a strong bond created between these people instantly.
On the top of hostel in Singapore, Myself & Tim DeVinney, really latched onto the comical reality of introductory backpacker conversations which always goes as follows upon first meet "Whats Your Name? Where You From? Where are you going next?" its always asked and the truth be told, often falling upon deaf ears, because its said that much! After coming up with that anchor for the song the rest slotted in around it, telling tales of a typical day and the frame of mind that a backpacker might feel. Using a 5 string guitar and a pen and paper we nutted the skeleton of the song out on that rooftop while other backpackers (Sergio, Deniz, Sachin,Juan and many others) watched on in amusement.
I've played the song live numerous times through the rest of the travel, adding on to it as I went. People always liked it and wound up getting it stuck in their head. Almost 3 years later, I made it my mission to realise this vision and materialise it and so it has happened and for that I am proud I followed through. Must thank my musical Pal, James Yeomans for helping me out on this, production and mixing. For the intro vocal featurettes whom I recored on my trip, varying from Somoan to Japanese, thanks for you contribution guys (Gareth, India, Kohei, Sachin, Eno & Anastasia). I think its a great little number, one of fun, excitement, one of sentiment and ultimately to inspire others to possibly take that very same step.
