On the 18th of March, Irish bred horse "Don Cossack" confidently passed the finishing line at the Gold Cup of the Cheltenham festival. The Gordon Elliot trained horse cruised through the whole race without a hitch with jockey Bryan Cooper instrumental in that regard. Owner Michael O'Leary was ecstatic as his last success at this race was 10 years previous with War of Attrition. The very next day my brother Liam Og & I decided to pen a song to commemorate and celebrate that momentous occasion.
It was Liam Og who came up with the idea and hitching the new lyrics on the back of a "Wagon Wheel" melody, a well-known country classic. We had so much fun making it (which took about 2.5 hours to write). We decided that rather being a Mr.nice guy tune we would do what all horse enthusiasts do to each other when they meet up.....i.e. cut the back off each other! Cooper, Elliot and O'Leary all get digs in the song but these humerous verses of the ballad song are balanced out by the choruses which brings a sense of pride, community & nostalgia to the whole event. After another few hours of recording, mixing and a few late hours of video making that night, the final product was unveiled, however not after a slight legal hiccup in using video footage belonging to RacingUK.
The song has gathered plenty of coverage & we have decided to sell on behalf of Irish Injured Jockeys Association online. We hope it can contribute in some way to this important fund. We wish Don Cossack all the success in his next "Gold Cup Day" endeavour in Punchestown on the 27th of April.
